As part of the WAGAR project, a collaborative effort involving UNHCR Malaysia and APRREN (Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network), the Rohingya Refugee Women’s Sewing Class is a transformative initiative. This specialized class provides a dedicated space for refugee women to acquire valuable sewing skills, fostering empowerment and skill-building. The project emphasizes several critical aspects of sewing, guiding participants to make effective use of sewing gadgets, master the art of pressing seams during the sewing process, select quality fabrics, carefully cut patterns, measure seam allowances, press fabric with precision, learn from mistakes, and hone their stitch tension and motor skills.

Women are learning everything from how to use sewing tools to recognizing different fabrics.

women are taking this sewing class to learn new skills and feel empowered. With the help of experienced teachers, they are learning everything from how to use sewing tools to recognizing different fabrics. They’re also figuring out how to use fabric patterns and how to cut fabric in the right way. As they practice, they’re getting better at making clothes and understanding which fabric to use for different things. Through this class, these women are gaining confidence and independence, one stitch at a time.

With the help of experienced teachers, they are learning everything from how to use sewing tools to recognizing different fabrics.
